Le prince Louis et ses deux soeurs Jeanne et Victoire dans le livre d'heures de Catherine de Médicis, BnF

Louis de France est le deuxième fils de Henri II et de Catherine de Médicis. Né en février 1549, il meurt prématurément en octobre 1550. S'il existait des portraits originaux du jeune prince, aucun semble nous être parvenu (voir Les Clouet de Catherine de Médicis par Zvereva).

La seule image qui reste de lui serait une miniature du livre d'heures de Catherine de Médicis. La base de données de la BnF nous indique que le petit garçon aux mains jointes représente le futur Charles IX, mais on peut supposer qu'il s'agit plutôt du prince Louis. Catherine de Médicis a voulu avoir dans son livre d'heures, le portrait de tous ses enfants, or Charles IX est déjà représenté sur un autre folio. De plus, le jeune prince est ici représenté avec deux autres enfants de la reine morts en bas âge. L'artiste qui a peint le livre d'heures vers 1573 aurait donc regroupé sur une seule page les enfants de la reine morts prématurément
