RAISING MACHINES, TEAZLES ETC. The operation by which a tissue is rendereddowny and woolly is very ancient. A long timebefore cotton was used this operation was practisedon woollen fabrics; on the mural paintings ofPompei slaves are represented raising, or cardingfabrics by hand. This operation for cotton has only acquireda certain importance during the past few years.Fabrics thus treated no longer belong to theordinary styles, and constitute a speciality.
