Вялікія і сярэдніх памераў птушкі, маса 1—23 кг. Самцы большыя за самак. Апярэнне шчыльнае, разнастайнай афарбоўкі. Шыя сярэдняй даўжыні, тоўстая. Ногі моцныя, доўгія, трохпальцыя, з цвёрдымі мазолістымі падушачкамі. Хвост кароткі.
